What is the Association of Independent Movers?

The Association of Independent Movers (AIM) is a not-for-profit trade association for the removals industry that requires its members to work to a Code of Practice.

The UK removals industry is largely unregulated. UK customers have some protection provided by various bodies such as Trading Standards and the Advertising Standards Authority, but there is no government body that oversees the removals industry specifically.

As there is no official stamp of approval, this can make it difficult for customers to choose a removals company that they can trust. This is where AIM can be useful.

Standards of Service

Before a removals business can join AIM, they need to meet certain criteria and agree to work to a Code of Practice that is specific to the industry. They must show a commitment to providing a quality service at clearly defined prices, with a focus on professionalism and consumer protection.

When a customer sees the AIM logo on a member’s website, it should reassure them that the mover is serious about providing a good quality service. They have clearly made the time and effort to put the necessary practices in place, in order to become AIM members.

Dispute Resolution

Apart from the consumer protection measures in the membership criteria and Code of Practice, all AIM members are subscribed to the Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme provided by the Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman (FHIO). This means that any dispute that is unresolved by way of the member’s complaints procedure, can be referred to an independent ombudsman. This eliminates the need for customers to go through the small claims court system to get the dispute resolved. The FHIO decision is legally binding.

Not-for-Profit

AIM gets income from membership fees which cover overheads. The Board of Directors are voluntary and there are no high salaries to pay. Because there is no drive for profit, the focus can remain on ensuring the members provide the necessary service standards, rather than basing acceptance on willingness to pay the fees.

In short, the AIM logo means the member moving company has made a commitment and not just agreed to buy a logo.
